CBM Pathology, a Sonic Healthcare anatomic pathology practice, is privileged to include Dr. Thomas A. Summers Jr., M.D., M.B.A., M.H.P.E., as a member of its dynamic medical staff. He has extensive medical and academic experience as well as an impressive Army Medical Service background.

Dr. Summers completed his Bachelor of Science degree at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. He earned his medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. After the completion of his medical degree, Dr. Summers served a National Capital Consortium residency in pathology at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and National Naval Medical Center. Following his residency, he completed a fellowship in hematology at the National Institutes of Health and National Cancer Institute. In addition, Dr. Summers took courses in forensic medicine, gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology, anatomic pathology, and neuropathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.

Dr. Summers has held numerous academic and professional medical appointments. His academic appointments include associate professor of pathology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and instructor of pathology at the same institution. His professional appointments include multiple directorships in the Department of Pathology at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and laboratory medical directorships at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. He was a staff hematopathologist at Walter Reed, a member of consultant staff at the National Institutes of Health and chief of the Department of Pathology at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. He served as a brigade surgeon in the 2nd Infantry Division and as a command surgeon at the United States Army Cadet Command in Fort Knox, Kentucky, and the Army Recovery Care Program in Arlington, Virginia.

Dr. Summers has also been the recipient of many military awards and commendations. These include multiple Army Commendation Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medals, Defense Meritorious Service Medals, and a Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal. Dr. Summers has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, books, and presented numerous papers and poster presentations. He has been a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Cancer Research and Therapeutics and Advances in Anatomic Pathology. He has served on a number of institutional committees at Walter Reed and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital and professional committees with the College of American Pathologists.

Dr. Summers is a Fellow member of the College of American Pathologists and a member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathologists and the American Society of Hematology.

Dr. Summers holds full medical licensure and is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and hematopathology.
